One of the subjects Arabella is sitting for her HSC is Drama. As part of her drama exam she must participate in not only an Individual Performance but also a Group Performance. In her group there are three others and they have to write, direct, costume and perform a seven-minute production.
Rehearsals are underway as Arabella and her group must perform their group performance and their individual performances on Tuesday night in the school’s drama theatre. Spectator’s are welcome as it’s always so much better to perform in front of an audience but Arabella doesn’t see it that way. ‘I don’t want you to come. I know what you’ll do. You’ll sit up the front like you did for Archie and you’ll have that grin on your face that is very off-putting. You know what you’re like, you can’t help yourself so don’t come, you’ll just put me off.
‘Are other parents coming Arabella?’
‘Yes’.
‘Will they be grinning?’
‘Not like you and they won’t sit so close to the front’.
‘I’d like to come. I’d like to be supportive’.
‘Mum, you know what you’re like. You can’t resist. You always have to make eye contact and with my individual performance I have to look out into the audience and talk to them and if I see you grinning I’ll forget my lines. I’m trying to get a good mark’.
‘Arabella, if I’m not there I’ll look like a non-supportive and disinterested parent. They’ll think I don’t care.’
‘Okay, you can come. But sit up the back. Somewhere dark where I can’t see you’.
‘Are the seats in the dark specially marked so I’ll recognise them when I get there?’
‘Mum, don’t get me stressed.’
So this weekend Arabella has been busy rehearsing both her individual performance and her group performance. Later today she rehearsed at the home of one of the girls in her group. They were giving it their all for a good few hours and just when they thought they were getting somewhere the doorbell rang. They opened the door and were greeted by a policeman. He said one of the neighbours had phoned emergency services reporting yelling and screaming coming from the house. The constable had been sent to investigate a ‘domestic disturbance’.
The girls all thought this was fabulous and utterly hysterical. They begged the policeman for a photo. He muttered something about it being inappropriate for him to be photographed with the girls which only encouraged them all the more. Before he knew it, he was photographed and that would be Arabella getting up close and personal with her arm on his shoulder.
Clearly on Tuesday night, even in a dimly lit back corner of the theatre, I’m in for quite a show!

Ahh, too funny. I’ll bet that doesn’t happen that often for the policeman.
He was very obliging!
Oh the poor chap-still, he seems to be coping with it all.
Do let us know how the performance goes-can’t wait!!
LOL that’s cute that policeman felt uncomfortable taking a photo hehe 😛 but that’s really nice that you’re so supportive ~
I can already see your grin. Waiting in suspense for all the details :d
Thanks Cindy. I’ll definitely let you know how it goes! xx
How can you NOT grin? That’s your little girl up on stage. Kids just don’t understand how much their parents love and are proud of them. At least if they’re lucky enough to have parents like you and your hubby. 🙂
Break a leg, Arabella.

haha, too funny. That’s an awfully young policeman! I bet he loved the attention 😉
hahahahahahha,…this is way too funny, my friend! 🙂 I just gave you an award, Charlie: Come over & read why! Here is the link: http://sophiesfoodiefiles.wordpress.com/2012/07/22/vegan-double-ginger-rhubarb-jam-some-latest-awards-yeah/
so funny!! I’m sure she’ll do great in the rehearsal!!!

Awww.. what a giggle.. loved this story today. We parents love to be the bane of our children’s existence. That young police officer is quite a cutie.. the girls must have swooned!! I think I grinned like an idiot every time my kids went on stage.. perhaps they need blinding lights so they can’t look out and see us:D
OMG … I love this picture and the story … It must be really fun at your house 🙂
Will you look at the body language in the photo? Four teenage girls and a hot young cop…hehehe
I know. They were so exciting. ‘Studying’ has never had so much appeal! xx
I wonder if the policeman got an invitation? I bet he would be allowed to sit in the front row and grin:)
Haha this is a great story! What an eventful lead up to Arabella’s performance!
Great story, Charlie. Just great! You have captured the parent-child conversation perfectly. Must be universal. And all those UGGs make me smile. I hope Arabella gat high marks!
Hahaha how hilarious! Imagine the cop going back to the station… it was just a group of teenage girls rehearsing their drama production!
Really funny! Parents exist to embarrass their offspring – that’s just the way it is. Have a swell time on Tuesday!
Such cute story, your daughter is beautiful! Hope all goes well, Actually the constable doesn’t look like being surrounded by all those pretty girls is sucy a bad thing! 🙂 I’m sure it will be a very entertaining performance!
Hilarious ! And I feel your pain I’ve been banned as well , but that won’t stop me !
That is so funny kids…. and love the policeman turning up lol
Oh my gosh, my friends and I would’ve tried to pull that too if we’d had a visit from a policeman that cute when we were younger!
He looks just like the cat that got the cream. Inappropriate maybe but I’m sure it made his day.
Can you just imagine what is going through that young cops mind!
🙂 Mandy
Haha that policeman looks pretty darn happy if you ask me 😀
Very realistic acting no doubt!
Cheers

HAHA! Funny convo between Mum and Daughter. I’ve always been terribly frightened of performing on stage so kudos to Arabella! Have fun tomorrow! =D
Oh, that photo…I am giggling even as I type. The look on his face!! I think he’s fairly happy to be there, myself.
What a classic – but he looks like he was totally a good sport about it! xx
If their rehearsal was that convincing, they don’t even need to do the show. Give those girls an “A” right now. BTW, the police officer looks way too young to be a police officer.
It may not be The Greatest Show on Earth but I bet it will be a memorable one. I hope you’ll share some of the details.
Good Luck… It would be nice to hear about this show… Thanks and Love, nia
What a great story–and you’re right, performances are always better in front of an audience. It just gives the performances more energy. Hope Arabella breaks a leg (not literally) tomorrow night!
What a handsome police officer! I can see why the ladies wanted his photo — I’m certain it wasn’t a hardship for him. It’s too bad that your officers have to wear bullet proof vests too, ours wear them and it must be awful in this heat. I just heard that our park patrol officers will start wearing them too. Did you get to go to the play?
Yes, I’d say the police officer was overwhelmed! We’re off to the performance tonight. Leaving here in a few hours. I’ll be sure to fill you in on the night’s events!
Ha! Now isn’t there always a twist to every performance? 😉 Brilliant!
Haha, great story Charlie – if the “rehearsal” resulted in “the old bill” being called then the main event on the night should be highly entertaining to see! I would think I’d be sitting at the front grinning like crazy at my kid 😀
Great post as usual, Charlie!
Oh this photo is just priceless! So funny! And I, too, recall being asked not to sit so close and not to call attention to any performances, sports or otherwise, with my camera! Oh the indignity, Carlie! 🙂
