Flour and Stone

A few weeks ago, Daisy from Never Too Sweet contacted me and let me know she was coming up to Sydney from Melbourne  for a few days and would I like to meet up with her for lunch.  Of course I would!

Daisy hasn’t yet been blogging a year and although we’ve never met I feel as though I know her quite well as we’re always visiting each other’s sites.  We were to meet at a tiny cafe in Woolloomooloo (and that’s still a word I have trouble spelling) just one hour from when Daisy landed in Sydney.  I parked in the Domain Car Park that costs $20.00 for a couple of hours so it’s not cheap but in that part of the city you have few other options.

A Ford from the 1950’s

That’s not my car – I just parked beside it!

The cafe, Flour and Stone is tiny!  Most of the space is taken up by the kitchen so they have seating for just a handful of people and the bulk of their business happens with the takeaway crowd.

Flour and Stone

Daisy and her partner, Mr Bao, are on a week’s annual leave so it was lovely for me to be able to meet both Daisy and her partner because on her blog, Mr Bao is so well featured that I felt I knew him too.

Beautiful fresh roses

Now…Daisy promised she would bring her appetite with her and so after ordering coffee Daisy and Mr Bao ordered toasted sandwiches that are freshly made every morning with the bread they bake on the premises.

Daisy’s Wagyu Beef, mature cheddar and tomato relish sandwich – $10.00

No complaints!

Mr Bao’s sandwich…

Poached Chicken, corn, avocado and iceberg with chilli mayo – $10.00

I ordered a pie…

Chicken, leek and tarragon pie – $7.00

The pie was delicious with plenty of chicken breast and no nasty surprises like gristle!  It was lovely with the tarragon flavour.

We then ordered a few desserts that we shared.  (That’s a salted caramel tart in the background that Mr Bao and I didn’t think was very ‘salted’.)

Donut filled with Jam and Custard – $4.50

I loved this and thought it was the freshest and healthiest and lightest donut I’ve ever had – absolutely nothing like those horrid Krispy Cremes.

Panacotta Lamingtons – $6.00

These lamingtons were very popular with many people ordering them and often sharing between two.  The lamington was delightfully fresh and light with masses of coconut and fabulous jam.  It would have to be the best lamington I’ve ever tasted.  And it’s huge!

Carrot Cake – $5.50

The carrot cakes are made with purple carrots but I couldn’t see the difference between using purple or orange carrots.  It was a very nice carrot cake full of spices.

They had a lot of gingerbread cookies in many different shapes but Daisy chose the rainbow…

Rainbow Gingerbread

The gingerbread is spicy with the ginger giving it lots of flavour and not too sweet – a great way to end a meal.

But regardless of the great meal, I had a wonderful few hours meeting Daisy and her Mr Bao and felt honoured to have been invited to meet with them for lunch.  Daisy and I talked about what we love about blogging and what we both agreed on was that the unexpected benefit has been the friendships made with strangers that occasionally turn into meetings – in small and surprising cafes in suburbs with names that are difficult to spell; (or even pronounce!)

I hope to catch up with Daisy again on my next visit to Melbourne – whenever that may be!

If you liked this post, why not like me!

  1. The key to spelling Woolloomooloo correctly is to remember sheeptoiletcowtoilet. Wool loo moo loo. Done.

  2. How wonderful that you were able to meet Daisy and her partner; I loved meeting Charles! The cafe sounds very nice and not as expensive as most I read about in Australia. But the parking is brutal! Downtown in our financial district parking can be as much as $4.50 per half hour so not too dissimilar to your experience (I once paid $70 to park from 8am to 8pm, fortunately my employer paid for it!)

I’m so sad that I couldn’t come but I have so much on this week 🙁 The lamingtons are my favourite item along with the donuts 🙂

  4. The lamington looks great … well, until I discovered the coconut. 🙁 ,,, So, I’ll go with the carrot cake. Looks like a great lunch with good company!

  5. I just love that you’re able to meet up with so many bloggers. Our lives are certainly richer with these new found friendships.

I absolutely agree that this has been one of the unexpected bonuses of blogging–the friendships forged. Thus far I’ve met one other blogger here in Minnesota and that would be Gretchen and her family. She was as delightful in person as online. Amazing how this works. And the food you ate looks delish.

  7. Definitely a delightful place to eat! (Had me going on the car photo, too — ha — thought it was yours, Charlie — somehow it suits you.) I agree, “meeting” folks in blog world has been a highlight, but meeting in person is a treat. Glad you had such a wonderful visit. (And thanks for the sandwich ideas!)

I think I need to come to Australia for lunch. You seem to have wonderful lunch spots there!

  9. This tempts me to plan a trip to Aussie. My husband’s cousin lives in Sydney and we keep planning a trip everytime there is a India-Aussie test cricket game. Yes, my husband is one major cricket buff. Awesome pictures of the lunch spot.

  10. I know I’m a terrible American when I say I could eat an original Krispy Kreme right now and feel the grease go down my throat. 🙂 How wonderful that you got to meet someone new. Can’t wait to catch up soon.

  11. That is so awesome my friend it must have been a fantastic and obviously delicious meet up 🙂

    Cheers

  12. Panacotta Lamingtons?
Looks like you had more desserts than savoury dishes – the way it should be:)

  13. I had not even heard of Lamingtons until 10 years ago and still have not had one.It all looks quite delightful.

  14. I think I’m meeting Daisy next week at the Adelaide blogger conference. Not yet been to Flour & Stone but I do want to try their pies, doughnut & lamington. All in one trip!

  15. yummychunklet says:

    I’ll take that lamington, please!

  16. Daisy comes across as such a bubbly lass; I’m sure your lunch together was fabulous! Almost everyone I’ve visited and stayed with in my past months of travelling have been dear friends forged through blogging. We bloggers be goooood people. 😉

  17. Claire @ Claire K Creations says:

Oh I’m sooo jealous you had a lamington. I met NQN there for the first time earlier in the year and I still drool over the lamington!

It’s so lovely to meet online friends in real life!

  18. Oh, chicken and leek pie sounds delicious! Actually, of those dishes look great. What a fun lunch!

  19. Jenny @ Ichigo Shortcake says:

Yayy you got to meet Daisy too, I met up with her just not long ago and she was such a lovely person. Would love to meet up with you too one day! 🙂 The food looked lovely, especially that pannacotta lamington…mmm

  20. What a lovely lunch! It sounds like a fun catch up and the pictures suggest you had some really great food.

  21. I think I would just stick with the desserts. Lamingtons are my all time favourite cake – as long as they are fresh and have jam and fresh cream. None of that whipped cream in a can that tastes of air. Ughh!

  22. Barb Bamber says:

How wonderful that you got to meet up.. and eat at that cute cafe! Flour and Stone is just the sort of cafe I really enjoy going to. At first I thought you ordered everything in these photos? Maybe you did, lol, that is so fun! My favorite is the lamington, my daughter and I made those once when she was studying Australia:)

  23. Sounds like you picked the perfect spot to get acquainted. And that is one, very good looking donut! (Pssst .. I’ve never liked Krispy Kremes.)

  24. This blogging really opens up a whole new world of acquaintances – how wonderful to be able to meet up.

  25. GourmetGetaway says:

What a great lunch! I agree it is a happy, unexpected plus of blogging, meeting up with people with a similar interest and sharing a meal. Daisy and Mr Boa are both such lovely people.

I think I would have skipped lunch and just gone with a series of desserts! They all looked so good 🙂

  26. thelifeofclare says:

This is such a cool story! I’m yet to meet another blogger but feel like I’ve made so many awesome friends. This lunch looks absolutely delicious! I looke at the cakes for ages!

  27. Mandy - The Complete Cook Book says:

I have not had the opportunity yet to meet a fellow blogger yet – maybe soon. Lovely looking eats.
    🙂 Mandy xo

  28. It was our pleasure to meet you Charlie 🙂 I have been following your blog for quite some time, so it was lovely to finally put a face and person to a blog ~

I felt like I already knew you the moment we met ~ Oh gosh I hope I didn’t scare you with the amount of cakes and sweets I decided to order 😛 Flour and Stone is so good that I couldn’t help but go back on Thursday.

I really hope you and Carl will come to Melbourne soon! I’d love to take you around ~ but if not I’m already planning my next Sydney trip hehe! xoxo

  29. I thought that a rather interesting presentation of carrot cake–but then, all of it looks great. You have so many options to choose from so close to you. Nice!

  30. Flour and Stone is an amazing place. I too tried one of their pies, the donuts and their lamingtons and I can’t tell you which was my favourite because it was all simply amazing. I had a brief enounter with Daisy too. Hopefully we’ll be able to meet soon too, Charlie 🙂 x

  31. I leaned in so close to my computer screen before I managed to remind myself that I couldn’t actually crawl in & get that lamington… Definitely want to go to here soon!
