‘Stop Hunger, Start Cooking’ Cookbook

Oxfam is a wonderful charity organisation dedicated to seeing a future free from poverty and hunger.

For the second consecutive year, Oxfam has created a cookbook that can be downloaded without charge from their website. The cookbook, titled ‘Stop Hunger, Start Cooking’ includes recipes from top Australian chefs and foodies including Neil Perry, Kylie Kwong and Australia’s first Master Chef winner, Julie Goodwin.  These highly skilled and talented chefs have teamed with a Sri Lankan farmer to draw attention to the growing food crisis facing the world’s poorest communities.

Over 30 chefs, food bloggers and home cooks from around Australia have donated recipes for the online cookbook that is helping to provide small-scale farmers with the tools, seeds and skills they need to feed their families.  I was honored to be asked if Hotly Spiced would like to donate a recipe and I enthusiastically agreed.

Chandrani from Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka’s North is the face of Oxfam’s Stop Hunger Campaign.  Until recently Chandrani and her husband worked as poorly paid labourers and were unable to afford enough food for their family or cover the costs of sending their three children to school.

Oxfam partnered with the RGNK organisation and supplied a water irrigation system to her area.  This enabled Chandrani to grow vegetables for her family and start a home gardening business.  Not only does her family now have enough to eat, Chandrani is earning an income from selling surplus vegetables and this covers the cost of sending her children to school.

Chandrani’s family eat what is harvested, vegetables like capsicum, radish, beetroot, spinach, eggplant and chillies.  The foodies who have contributed to the cookbook were inspired to donate their own vegetable-based recipes.

Julie Goodwin said, ‘No matter what country we’re from, mothers will do whatever it takes to give their children healthy food.  Women in Sri Lanka are prepared to do the work needed to plant a veggie garden and nurture their plants until they’re ready to be harvested and eaten.  But they need some help getting that garden started.  Please join me and Oxfam in partnering with these mothers, to provide the tools and seeds they need to grow food for their families.’

Kylie Kwong said, ‘I passionately believe that all people, the world over, should have access to fresh, nutritious and sustainable food to support their families.  Unfortunately, far too many are missing out, but together we can make a difference’.

To download the cookbook, Stop Hunger, Start Cooking! or to learn more about Oxfam’s work to combat hunger around the world, please visit their website.

A photo competition is also being launched asking supporters to get behind the campaign by cooking one of the many recipes provided and taking a photo to go in the draw to win prizes from the Oxfam Fair Trade gift range.

I hope you enjoy the cookbook that is behind such a wonderful and important cause and that you enjoy the fabulous range of recipes xx

How lovely to be able to participate in such a wonderful project Charlie, congratulations!
Isn’t it so true that mothers really will sacrifice so much to provide for their children. It’s humbling to think they mean food and water though, not soccer games and music lessons. We don’t truly know the meaning of the word here in the Lucky Country
